How the Overtime Calculator works

This overtime calculator works out what extra hours are worth. Enter your hourly rate, your regular hours and the overtime hours at time and a half, double time or whatever multiplier your contract or award sets, and it returns the overtime rate, the overtime pay, total pay and your average rate across every hour worked.

Overtime calculator formula

Overtime pay is the hourly rate times the multiplier times the overtime hours. The overtime calculator adds that to regular pay, which is the hourly rate times regular hours, plus any double-time hours at twice the base rate:

Total pay = rate × regular hours + rate × multiplier × overtime hours + rate × 2 × double-time hours

The multiplier is always applied to the base rate, not to a rate that already includes a loading. If a shift allowance or penalty rate applies as well, check your contract or award for whether overtime is calculated on top of it.

Worked example: time and a half

You earn 30.00 an hour for a 38-hour week and work 6 hours of overtime at time and a half. Regular pay is 30 × 38 = 1,140.00. The overtime rate is 30 × 1.5 = 45.00 an hour, so the overtime pay is 45 × 6 = 270.00. Total pay for the week is 1,410.00.

Worked example: adding double time

Add 2 hours at double time to the same week. Those hours pay 30 × 2 × 2 = 120.00, so total pay is 1,530.00 for 46 hours, an average of 33.26 an hour. The average is useful for comparing a job with regular overtime against one with a higher base rate and none.

Quick answers

FAQ

How do I calculate time and a half?

Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5 to get the overtime rate, then multiply that by the overtime hours. On 24.00 an hour, time and a half is 36.00 an hour, and 4 hours of it is 144.00.

When does overtime start?

That depends on your contract, award or local law. Many workplaces pay overtime after a set number of hours a day or a week, such as 38 or 40. Enter the hours paid at the ordinary rate as regular hours and everything beyond that as overtime.

Is overtime taxed at a higher rate?

Overtime is added to your ordinary income for the pay period, so more of the pay can fall into a higher bracket in that period and the withholding can look heavier. This calculator works on gross pay only and does not apply any tax.

Can I enter a multiplier other than 1.5 or 2?

Yes. Enter any multiplier of 1 or more, such as 1.25 or 1.75. Double-time hours have their own field so a week with both rates can be worked out in one go.
