How the Hours To Minutes Converter works

This hours to minutes converter changes any amount of time between seconds, minutes, hours, days and weeks in one go. It also breaks the amount into days, hours, minutes and seconds and shows it as h:mm:ss, so 2.5 hours reads as 150 minutes and 2:30:00.

Time units are not decimal, which is why converting them in your head goes wrong so often. There are 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, 24 hours in a day and 7 days in a week. Each step uses a different multiplier, and fractional amounts such as 2.5 hours or 0.75 days need converting before they make sense on a clock.

How to convert hours to minutes

Multiply hours by 60. Two hours is 120 minutes, 2.5 hours is 150 minutes and 0.2 hours is 12 minutes. To go from minutes to hours, divide by 60: 90 minutes is 1.5 hours and 200 minutes is 3.333… hours, or 3 hours 20 minutes.

The converter works through seconds behind the scenes. It turns the amount into seconds using the size of the unit you chose, then divides by the size of every other unit:

Unit Seconds
Minute 60
Hour 3,600
Day 86,400
Week 604,800

Results are shown to up to six decimal places, so very small or very large conversions stay readable without losing precision.

The breakdown readings

Two extra readings make a converted amount easier to use:

Both are rounded to the nearest whole second.

Worked examples

Where the conversion matters

Days, months and years

Months and years are left out on purpose. A month is between 28 and 31 days and a year 365 or 366, so any fixed conversion is only an average. When you need to count calendar days between dates, use a date difference calculator, which accounts for month lengths and leap years.

Leap seconds are also ignored. They are added to official clocks very rarely, and almost no everyday software or schedule accounts for them.

Common mistakes

Writing 1.30 hours when you mean 1 hour 30 minutes is the classic slip: 1.30 hours is 1 hour 18 minutes. Keep decimal hours and clock times separate, and convert between them with the decimal hours converter when a form wants one and you have the other.

A second slip is multiplying by 100 instead of 60. Spreadsheets that treat 2.5 hours as 250 minutes overstate time by two thirds, and the error compounds when the result feeds a pay or billing formula. Always multiply hours by 60 and divide minutes by 60.

Rounding too early causes a quieter drift. Converting 7 minutes to 0.12 hours and back gives 7.2 minutes, and across a month of entries those fractions add up. Keep the full value until the final step, then round once. If your system rounds to the nearest quarter hour, convert the exact minutes first and apply the rounding rule to the total rather than to each entry.

How many minutes are in common hour values

The formula is minutes = hours × 60 and seconds = hours × 3,600. For example, 2.5 hours is 150 minutes or 9,000 seconds. Each example below also shows the h:mm:ss form a stopwatch would display.

FAQ

How many minutes are in 2.5 hours?

There are 150 minutes in 2.5 hours, because 2.5 × 60 = 150. The converter also shows that as 2:30:00, or 2 hours 30 minutes.

How do I convert minutes to hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. For example, 135 minutes ÷ 60 = 2.25 hours, which is 2 hours 15 minutes. Choose Minutes as the unit to convert from, and the converter shows hours and every other unit at once.

How many seconds are in a day?

A day has 86,400 seconds: 24 hours × 60 minutes × 60 seconds. A week has 604,800. These figures appear constantly in programming, where timeouts and expiry times are usually set in seconds.

Why are months not included?

Months vary from 28 to 31 days, so converting hours to months can only ever give an average. For real calendar spans, a date difference calculator counts the actual days between two dates instead.
