Feet to cm: the exact factor

Since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959, one foot has been defined as exactly 0.3048 metres. That makes it exactly 30.48 centimetres, with no rounding anywhere. One inch is a twelfth of that, 2.54 cm.

The formula

cm = feet × 30.48, and feet = cm ÷ 30.48. For a height given in feet and inches, turn the inches into a fraction of a foot first, or convert both parts and add: cm = feet × 30.48 + inches × 2.54.

Worked examples

The first example is a height of 5 feet 10 inches. 5 × 30.48 = 152.4 cm, and 10 × 2.54 = 25.4 cm, so the total is 177.8 cm. Typing 5'10" into the converter gives the same answer in one step.

• ft equals gives the length in centimetres. If you typed feet and inches, the label shows the combined length in decimal feet, so 5'10" appears as 5.8333 ft.
• Conversion shows the factor, 1 ft = 30.48 cm. After a swap it reads 1 cm = 0.0328 ft.
• Inverse gives the factor for the opposite direction.

Decimal feet are not feet and inches. 5.5 feet is 5 feet 6 inches, not 5 feet 5 inches. To turn the fractional part into inches, multiply it by 12.

Tips and pitfalls

• Round heights to the nearest centimetre. Height measurements are rarely better than half a centimetre, so 177.8 cm is normally written as 178 cm.
• Watch the apostrophes. 5'10" means 5 feet 10 inches. A plain 5.10 means 5.1 feet, which is 5 feet 1.2 inches, a common mistake on forms that accept only decimals.
• US survey feet are retired. Land surveys in the United States once used a survey foot of 1200/3937 m, about 2 parts per million longer. It was withdrawn at the end of 2022 and never mattered for heights or building work.
