How the Inches To Feet works
This inches to feet converter divides by 12 as you type, because there are exactly 12 inches in a foot: 70 inches is 5.83 feet, or 5 ft 10 in, and 80 inches is 6.67 feet, or 6 ft 8 in. The explainer shows how to turn the decimal into feet and inches, which is how heights, TV sizes and timber are usually quoted. Press the swap button to turn feet into inches, where you can type 5'10" directly.
Inches and feet are both imperial units, but they still cause arithmetic errors because the system is base 12 rather than base 10. A figure such as 5.5 feet looks like 5 feet 5 inches and is actually 5 feet 6 inches. Converting carefully matters for heights, room and furniture measurements, picture frames and anything cut from a board.
Inches to feet: the rule
One foot is exactly 12 inches. Both units have been tied to the metre since 1959: an inch is 2.54 cm and a foot is 30.48 cm, so the ratio of 12 is exact.
The formula
feet = inches ÷ 12, and inches = feet × 12. To give the answer in feet and inches, the whole number of feet is the quotient and the remainder is the inches: 70 ÷ 12 = 5 remainder 10, so 70 inches is 5 feet 10 inches.
Worked examples
The first example is a child's height of 50 inches. 50 ÷ 12 = 4.1667 feet. The remainder of 50 − 48 = 2 inches gives 4 feet 2 inches.
The second example goes the other way. A door that is 6 feet 8 inches tall, a common US interior door height, is 6 × 12 + 8 = 80 inches. In the swap direction, type 6'8" and the converter returns 80 in.
A third example: a 65-inch television is measured on the diagonal, so 65 ÷ 12 = 5.42 feet, or 5 feet 5 inches corner to corner. The screen itself is about 4 feet 9 inches wide.
How many inches in a foot, and how many feet in common lengths
There are 12 inches in a foot, 36 inches in a yard and 63,360 inches in a mile. The table turns common inch figures into decimal feet and into feet and inches.

How to read the result
- in equals gives the length in decimal feet, for example 70 in equals 5.8333 ft.
- Conversion shows the factor, 1 in = 0.0833 ft. After a swap it reads 1 ft = 12 in.
- Inverse gives the factor for the opposite direction.
To get feet and inches from the decimal, keep the whole number and multiply the fraction by 12: 0.8333 × 12 = 10, so 5.8333 ft is 5'10".
Tips and pitfalls
- Decimal feet are not feet and inches. 5.10 ft is 5 feet 1.2 inches, not 5'10". Builders' tapes in the US sometimes show decimal feet for surveying, which adds to the confusion.
- Use the prime marks. One prime (') means feet and a double prime (") means inches. On a keyboard the straight apostrophe and quotation mark are fine.
- Fractions of an inch. US tape measures divide inches into sixteenths. 3/8 inch is 0.375 inch, and 0.375 ÷ 12 is 0.03125 foot.
- Metric is simpler for cutting lists. For materials sold in metric lengths, use the cm to inches converter or feet to cm.

FAQ
How many inches are in a foot?
Exactly 12 inches. Three feet make a yard of 36 inches, and 5,280 feet make a mile, which is 63,360 inches. The ratio has been exact since 1959.

It is 5 feet exactly, because 60 ÷ 12 = 5. It is about 152.4 cm, a common minimum height for fairground and theme park rides.
How do I convert inches to feet and inches?
Divide by 12. The whole number is the feet and the remainder is the inches. For example, 67 ÷ 12 is 5 remainder 7, so 67 inches is 5 feet 7 inches, written 5'7".
How many inches is 5 feet 10 inches?
