How the Apocalypse World Name Generator works

An Apocalypse World name generator for post-apocalyptic games. Apocalypse World-style games are set in a scorched world where survivors cling to holdings, gangs roam and a psychic storm hums under everything. Generate survivors, gangs, holdings and weird, maelstrom-touched names.

How the Apocalypse World name generator works

Survivors in the apocalypse get strange, scavenged names, a nickname, a mangled old name or a word someone picked up, like Tum Tum or Keeler. Gangs are named after their leader or a gritty image, like the Painted Riders. Holdings are built from ruins, so they are named after what they used to be, the Old Refinery or the Sunken Mall. The Weird mode names psychic phenomena.

    Scavenged names

In a broken world, names are broken too. Mix a nickname with a salvaged word or a job to suggest a history without spelling it out.

Apocalypse World is a game by Meguey Baker and Vincent Baker, published by Lumpley Games. This site is not affiliated with them. All names here are original.

    FAQ

What do Apocalypse World names sound like?

Strange, broken and scavenged, like nicknames, half-remembered names or single words. They suggest a world where the old culture has fallen apart and people name themselves however they can.

How do I name a holding?

Name it after the ruin it is built in, like the Last Overpass or the Old Dam. Survivors reuse what is left of the old world, and names are no different.

    How should gangs be named?

Gangs are often named after their leader, like Dremmer's crew, or given a violent image, like the Bone Brothers. Either way, the name should warn outsiders to keep away.

Can I use these in other post-apocalyptic games?

Yes. The names are original and fit any wasteland, post-apocalyptic or survival game or story, from tabletop campaigns to novels, films and video games set after the end of the world.
