How the Autognome Name Generator works
An autognome name generator for D&D's clockwork gnomes. Autognomes are small constructs built by rock gnome tinkerers, and the name they wake up with depends on their maker: a friendly given name, a model number, or a nickname earned by squeaking. Pick a kind and name a mechanical adventurer.
How the autognome name generator works
An autognome is built, not born, so its first name is whatever its maker chose. Gnome inventors tend towards cheerful workshop words like Cog, Sprocket and Widget, sometimes with a Mark number for a later version or a name that honours the maker. The Model number mode gives a designation the way a more methodical inventor might, with an optional pet name. Nicknames come from other people and usually describe the noises and quirks that autognomes develop as they age. Many autognomes go by more than one of these.
Autognome characters
Autognomes often leave their makers and go looking for purpose. A character who introduces themselves by model number and then accepts a nickname from the party has a small arc built into the name.

FAQ
Who names an autognome?
Usually the rock gnome who built it. Gnome tinkerers give their creations affectionate workshop names, or model numbers if they are more systematic. Autognomes who strike out on their own may keep the maker's name, pick a new one, or accept a nickname from friends.
What is a good autognome model number?
A short letter prefix and a number, like AG-77 or TK-404. The generator can add a pet name in quotes, which suggests the maker was fond of this one. Model numbers read well for an autognome who is still unsure of its own personality.
What is the difference between an autognome and a warforged?
Both are living constructs, but warforged were built as soldiers in Eberron and often have military designations. Autognomes are small gnome-made constructs with a playful, tinkering feel. Their names reflect that difference. The warforged page in this section covers soldier constructs.
Can I use these names for other clockwork characters?
Yes. These names suit any small clockwork creature, from a pet automaton to a steampunk robot. They are original and not tied to any setting, and the model number mode works for anything mass-produced.
