How the Aztec / Mayan Name Generator works

An Aztec and Mayan name generator for gods, rulers, priests and warriors. Choose Aztec for Nahuatl names like Itzcoatl and Xochiquetzal, or Mayan for royal titles like Kinich and Ajaw. Each name comes with a city, an order or a divine role, in the style of the codices and stelae.

How the Aztec and Mayan name generator works

Nahuatl, the Aztec language, builds names from joined words. Itz is obsidian, coatl serpent, xochitl flower, quetzal the precious bird, ocelotl jaguar, cuauhtli eagle, atl water. Itzcoatl is "obsidian serpent" and Xochiquetzal "flower quetzal". The generator joins a Nahuatl root and ending in the same way. Classic Maya names come from royal inscriptions, where a ruler stacks titles and nouns: Kinich (sun-faced), Yax (first or green), Chak (red or great), Balam (jaguar), Chan (sky). K'inich Janaab Pakal of Palenque is the best known.

    Rulers, priests and warriors

Aztec rulers were tlatoani, "speakers", of their cities, and warriors rose through orders like the eagle and jaguar warriors by taking captives. Maya kings and queens ruled city states like Tikal and Calakmul, and daykeepers read the sacred 260-day calendar. The generator gives each kind the setting it belongs to, so a name arrives with a place in society.

    Accuracy and spelling

Spellings follow modern conventions without the apostrophes Mayanists use for glottal stops, to keep names easy to read. The Maya prefixes Ah and Ix mark male and female names. Nahuatl and Maya are both still spoken by millions of people today, so these names come from living languages, not dead ones.

    FAQ

What is the difference between Aztec and Mayan names?

They come from different languages and eras. Aztec names are Nahuatl, from central Mexico in the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries. Maya names come from the Mayan languages of southern Mexico and Central America, best known from Classic period inscriptions over a thousand years earlier.

What do the Nahuatl name parts mean?

Itz means obsidian, coatl serpent, xochi flower, quetzal the precious green bird, ocelo jaguar, cuauh eagle, atl water, citlal star, tochtli rabbit and mix cloud. The ending -tzin is an honorific, like adding lord or lady. Most generated names can be translated as a short image.

What did Kinich and Ajaw mean to the Maya?

Ajaw means lord or ruler and was the core title of Maya kings. Kinich means sun-faced and associated a ruler with the sun god. Other titles such as Yax, meaning first or green, and Chak, meaning red or great, were stacked to build a royal name.

Can I use these names in a game or book?

Yes. The names are generated from vocabulary of living languages, and no one owns them. If your story draws closely on real Indigenous cultures, consider consulting modern Nahua and Maya writers, since these are living communities rather than lost civilisations.
