How the Beholder Name Generator works

A beholder name generator for D&D's eye tyrants. Beholders are floating spheres of paranoia and pride, each one convinced it is the only perfect being, so their names are harsh and alien and their titles are grand. Generate a plain name, a titled tyrant, a lesser spectator, an undead death tyrant or the lair it has carved out.

How the beholder name generator works

Beholders do not share a language with other creatures in any warm way, so their names are built from clicking, buzzing sounds, x, z, k and th, joined with an apostrophe or run together into two or three harsh syllables. The title modes add what a beholder calls itself, the Unblinking or Sovereign of Stone, because every beholder believes it is the one flawless form of its kind. Spectators, the lesser guardians summoned to watch a vault, get short, almost pet-like names with a duty attached. Death tyrants keep their living name but gain a grim prefix or title. Lair names come from the smooth tunnels a beholder carves with its disintegration ray.

Using a beholder in a campaign

A beholder is usually a boss, and a boss needs a name the players will learn to fear before they meet it. Let them hear the title first, from a terrified informant, and the name only when they reach the lair. A spectator guarding a door makes a good early encounter that hints at what lives deeper.

    FAQ

What do beholder names sound like?

Alien and harsh. Most use hard consonants like x, z, k and th, sometimes split with an apostrophe, so they look hard to pronounce. That is the point: a beholder does not care whether lesser creatures can say its name.

Why do beholders have such grand titles?

Beholders are extremely proud and paranoid. Each believes its own shape is the perfect one and all other beholders are flawed copies. A title like the Only True Form or the Flawless is how a beholder reminds the world of that belief.

What is the difference between a beholder and a spectator?

A spectator is a lesser beholder-kin, usually summoned to guard something for a set time. It has fewer eyes and a smaller ego. Its names here are short and simple, often with a duty like Warden of the Hoard attached.

Can I name the beholder's lair too?

Yes. The Beholder lair mode names the carved tunnels and chambers a beholder lives in, such as the Sunken Shaft or a lair named after its owner. It is useful for dungeon maps and rumours the players hear before they arrive.
