    How the Blazon Generator works

A blazon generator for random heraldry and coat of arms descriptions. A blazon is the formal written description of a coat of arms, using old heraldic words for colours, shapes and animals. Pick a style and generate a blazon for a noble house, knight or kingdom in your fantasy world.

    How the blazon generator works

A blazon starts with the field, the background colour, then any division, then the main shapes and finally the charges, the pictures on the shield. Tinctures are split into metals, Or for gold and Argent for silver, and colours such as Gules for red, Azure for blue, Sable for black, Vert for green and Purpure for purple. The generator follows the rule of tincture, which says metal should not sit on metal and colour should not sit on colour, so arms stay easy to see. Ordinaries are bold stripes and crosses, like a chevron or fess. For the family behind the shield, try the fantasy clan name generator.

    Reading a blazon

Or, a lion rampant Gules means a red lion standing on its hind legs, on a gold shield. Every word has a fixed meaning.

    FAQ

    What is a blazon?

A blazon is the formal description of a coat of arms written in heraldic language. Heralds used it so anyone who knew the terms could draw the exact same shield from words alone, without needing a picture.

What is the rule of tincture?

The rule of tincture says metals, gold and silver, should not be placed on other metals, and colours should not be placed on other colours. It keeps coats of arms clear and easy to recognise from a distance.

What do rampant and passant mean?

Rampant means an animal standing on its hind legs with front paws raised, ready to fight. Passant means walking, with one front paw raised. These positions are among the most common in heraldry.

Can I use these blazons in my world?

Yes. The blazons are randomly generated and free to use in fantasy novels, tabletop campaigns, video games and worldbuilding. Pair them with a family motto from the family motto generator for a complete noble house.
