How the Cattle Brand Generator works

This cattle brand generator suggests ranch brands written the way cowboys read them: the Rocking R, the Lazy J, the Circle T, the Flying W and the Bar 7, with letters, numbers and symbols such as a spur or an anchor, for a ranch name, a western novel, a logo or a leatherwork mark.

How the cattle brand generator reads a brand

A cattle brand is read from left to right, top to bottom and outside in, and every mark has a name. A letter lying on its side is lazy, one on a curved base is rocking, one with wings is flying, and one with legs is walking or running. A line is a bar, a curved line a half or quarter circle, and two lines meeting like a roof are a rafter. So a J on its back with a line under it is the Lazy J Bar. The cattle brand generator combines these rules to give names you can draw.

    Brand names as ranch names

Many ranches are simply named after their brand: the King Ranch's Running W, the Four Sixes of Texas, the Rocking R. That makes a brand a quick way to name a ranch in a western, a farm shop or a leather goods business. Real livestock brands must be registered with a state or provincial brand office, and the generator's ideas are not checked against any register.

    FAQ

How do you read a cattle brand?

Brands are read left to right, top to bottom and outside to inside. Positions and modifiers have names: lazy for a letter on its side, rocking for one on a rocker, flying for one with wings, and bar, circle or box for shapes.

Do I need to register a cattle brand?

In most US states and Canadian provinces, yes. Brands are registered with a state brand board or provincial registry, which checks that the design is unique within the jurisdiction. The generator's ideas are for inspiration only and must be checked.

What is the oldest cattle brand?

Branding is ancient; Egyptian tomb paintings show cattle being branded over four thousand years ago. In the Americas, Hernán Cortés's three crosses brand is often cited as the first, brought to Mexico in the 1500s.
