How the Changeling Name Generator works

A changeling name generator for the shapeshifters of Eberron and beyond. A changeling usually has a short true name used only among other changelings, and a wardrobe of personas, each with its own name, face and life. Pick True name, Persona, or both together to build a changeling who is several people at once.

How the changeling name generator works

Changelings can change their face and body at will, and many live as more than one person. Among their own kind they often use short, simple true names of one syllable. In public they adopt personas, and each persona is a full identity with a name, a job, a manner and friends who know only that face. A clever changeling keeps personas distinct: a baker called Mabel and a courier called Gideon who are never seen together. The generator gives true names, persona names with an occupation, or a true name with two personas already attached.

    Personas as character tools

For a player, each persona is an extra character to play. For a game master, a changeling NPC with three personas is a mystery waiting for the party to solve. Write down which persona the party has met, and let them discover the rest.

    FAQ

What is a changeling true name?

It is the name a changeling uses as themselves, especially with other changelings. True names tend to be short, one syllable or so, and are rarely shared with outsiders. A changeling who tells you their true name is showing great trust. The generator's True name mode produces names in that style.

How many personas should a changeling have?

As many as they can keep straight. Two or three is a good number for a player character: one for everyday use, one for work and one for emergencies. Each should have a name, a job and a distinctive habit. The combined mode starts you with two personas and a true name.

Can I use this for other shapeshifters?

Yes. Doppelgangers, fey tricksters and spies with a disguise kit all benefit from a set of cover identities. The persona mode gives you ordinary names with an occupation, which is exactly what a cover identity needs. Use the true name for the creature behind the masks.

Should a changeling persona name sound ordinary?

Yes, the more ordinary the better. A persona is meant to blend in, so plain, forgettable names with a common occupation work best. A flamboyant persona gets noticed, which is fine for a performer but dangerous for a spy. The generator keeps personas deliberately unremarkable.
