How the Character Appearance Generator works

A character appearance generator for quick physical descriptions. When the players meet someone new, a few vivid details help everyone picture the character. Pick a quick description, a full paragraph with build, hair, eyes and clothing, or just one distinguishing feature to make someone memorable.

How the character appearance generator works

The Quick mode gives a body type and one detail, enough to describe an NPC in one breath. The Full mode builds a short paragraph with build, hair, eyes, clothing and a distinguishing feature, which works well for main characters and story drafts. The Distinguishing feature mode gives a single detail, such as a gold tooth, a burn scar or a limp, for when you only need one thing that sticks. Clothing is written to hint at a history, like a military coat with the badges removed, so the description suggests a story. It pairs well with the NPC name generator.

    One detail is enough

Players forget long descriptions. One strong detail, like a missing finger, will be remembered for the whole campaign.

    FAQ

    How do I describe a character's appearance?

Start with their overall shape and how they move, then add one or two details that hint at their past, such as a scar or worn clothing. Avoid long lists of features, which slow the story down.

    What is a distinguishing feature?

A distinguishing feature is one detail that makes a character easy to recognise, like a gold tooth or a swallow tattoo. It helps players remember who is who, and it can become a clue if the character appears in disguise.

Why does clothing matter in a description?

Clothes show a character's past, job and wealth. Fine silks worn too long suggest someone who has fallen on hard times, and mismatched armour suggests a veteran of many fights, all without a single line of explanation.

Can I use these descriptions in my writing?

Yes. The descriptions are free to use in tabletop games, novels, short stories and writing practice. Change any detail to fit your setting, and pair them with a name, trait and motivation for a full character.
