How the Character Trait Generator works
A character trait generator for personality traits, habits and quirks. Traits make a character feel real at the table and on the page, giving players and readers something to remember. Pick positive traits, everyday habits, odd quirks or a trio of all three for a quick personality.
How the character trait generator works
Positive traits describe how a character treats other people, such as loyalty, honesty or calm. Habits are small things the character does over and over, like humming, counting coins or sketching faces, which are easy to act out in a game. Quirks are strange details that make people laugh or wonder, like naming every horse Biscuit. The Trio mode gives one of each, which is enough to play an NPC for a whole evening. Use it alongside the NPC name generator when the players meet someone new.
Show, do not tell
Traits work best when you show them. Instead of saying a shopkeeper is careful, have them count the coins twice while the players wait.
FAQ
What is the difference between a trait and a quirk?
A trait is a general part of someone's personality, like being loyal or curious. A quirk is a small odd detail, like salting tea. Traits shape big choices, while quirks make the character memorable in small moments.
How many traits should a character have?
Two or three is usually enough. One strong trait, one habit and one quirk give a clear picture without being confusing. Main characters can gain more traits over time as the story reveals more about them.
How do I use traits for NPCs?
Pick one trait and one habit and act them out when the NPC speaks. Players remember the innkeeper who counts coins twice far better than a plain description, and the habit makes the character easy to play again later.
Can I use these traits in my stories?
Yes. The traits are free to use in tabletop games, novels, short stories, screenplays and writing practice. Mix them with a flaw and a motivation from the other character generators to build a full, rounded personality in minutes.
