How the Dark Sun Name Generator works

A Dark Sun name generator for desert survival fantasy in D&D. In a Dark Sun-style world, metal is rare, water is precious, magic has scorched the land, and tyrant sorcerer-kings rule walled city-states through their templars. Generate names for gladiators, templars, sorcerer-kings, desert nomads, city-states and tribes.

How the Dark Sun name generator works

A burning desert strips names down to their bones. Most names here are short and harsh, one or two syllables with hard consonants and open vowels, so they sound like something shouted across an arena or a dune. Gladiators get a single name and an arena epithet, the Unbroken, Chainbreaker. Templars, the cruel bureaucrats of the sorcerer-kings, get a name and an office, Keeper of the Grain Tax. Sorcerer-kings get longer, older names and grandiose titles. Nomads take a tribe or a desert surname like Windreader. City-states and tribes name the few places where life survives.

    Survival flavour

Dark Sun is about scarcity, so names that reference water, dust, bone and sun help the setting feel real. A templar named for the grain tax or the water bureau tells the players exactly how the city controls its people.

    FAQ

What do Dark Sun names sound like?

Short, harsh and ancient. Many are one or two syllables with k, r, t and sh sounds. They should feel sun-baked and practical, without the flowing polish of elvish fantasy names.

How should a gladiator be named?

With a short name the crowd can chant and an epithet earned in the arena. The Gladiator mode builds names like Kralus the Unbroken or Senna Redsand. A half-giant or mul gladiator suits the bigger, bone-crunching epithets.

    What is a templar?

In a Dark Sun-style setting, templars are the priests and officials who serve the sorcerer-kings, collecting taxes and punishing dissent. The Templar mode gives them bureaucratic titles, which makes them feel both petty and dangerous.

Can I use these for other desert settings?

Yes. The names are original and work well in any harsh desert fantasy, post-apocalyptic wasteland or sword-and-sandal game with arenas, tyrant kings and scarce water.
