How the DCC Name Generator works

A DCC name generator for games in the style of Dungeon Crawl Classics. These games mix old-school dungeon crawling with pulpy sword-and-sorcery, starting with a funnel of doomed peasants, most of whom die before level one. Generate funnel peasants with odd jobs, warriors, wizards, otherworldly patrons, demons and weird dungeons.

How the DCC name generator works

A funnel starts each player with several 0-level peasants, so you need a lot of names fast. The Funnel peasant mode gives each one a short, earthy name and a humble, often strange job, Grub the Gongfarmer, Aggie the Leech Collector. Survivors become warriors or wizards in a sword-and-sorcery world, so those names are harsher and weirder, with pulp epithets like Serpent-Tongued. Wizards bargain with patrons, cosmic powers that get titles like the Queen of Moths or Nyarorr Who Dreams in Salt. Demons and dungeons complete the weird, pulp feel.

    Running a funnel

Generate 10 or 20 peasant names and let each player pick three or four. When a peasant dies, the name and job make a quick, funny epitaph. The survivor's name will be remembered.

    FAQ

    What is a funnel?

In Dungeon Crawl Classics-style games, each player starts with several 0-level characters, ordinary peasants with no class. They go through a deadly first adventure together, and the survivors become the real characters. It is a fast way to create memorable heroes.

Why do peasants have strange jobs?

A peasant's job decides their starting gear and gives them personality. A gongfarmer, who cleaned cesspits, or a leech collector is funny and memorable, which makes their likely death more entertaining for the table.

    What is a patron?

Wizards in these games can bargain with patrons, powerful and strange beings who grant magic for a price. The Patron mode generates cosmic names like the Hungering Worm or Sulathek, Eye. They work as villains too.

Can I use these in other sword-and-sorcery games?

Yes. The names are original and fit any pulpy, weird fantasy game, old-school dungeon crawl or sword-and-sorcery campaign, whatever system you use, and they make good names for villains, patrons and doomed hirelings too.
