How the Dragon Age-style Name Generator works

A Dragon Age name generator for the peoples of Thedas: Fereldans, Orlesian nobles, Tevinter magisters, Dalish elves, dwarves of Orzammar and the Qunari. Each people follows its own habits, from Fereldan banns and arls to Orlesian de names and Dalish clan names like Lavellan. Choose a people and gender and fill out an Inquisition.

How the Dragon Age name generator works

Thedas borrows from our world's cultures. Ferelden is medieval England and Scotland, with names like Loghain Mac Tir and Teagan Guerrin, and titles like bann, arl and teyrn. Orlais is France, full of de names and chevaliers. Tevinter is imperial Rome in decline, with magisters called Dorian Pavus and Gereon Alexius. The Dalish elves use flowing Elvhen names and take their clan's name as a surname, like Lavellan or Mahariel. The generator keeps each people's names and titles separate.

    Dwarves and Qunari

Dwarves in Orzammar belong to noble houses or castes, and their names are short and sturdy: Harrowmont, Aeducan, Tethras, Brosca. Qunari are more unusual. Under the Qun, a person's role becomes their name, so a soldier is simply a sten and a military leader the Arishok. Qunari who leave the Qun, the Tal-Vashoth, take personal names, and the Inquisitor Adaar's family name means "fixed" in Qunlat. The generator gives either a personal name with Adaar or a Qunari title.

    Using the names

These names suit Dragon Age fan fiction, custom Inquisitors and Wardens, and tabletop games set in Thedas. A few canonical names appear in the lists for flavour; pair them with a new clan or house for an original character. This site is not affiliated with BioWare or EA.

    FAQ

What are the Dalish clan names?

In the games, Dalish characters take the name of their clan as a surname: Lavellan in Inquisition, Mahariel and Sabrae in Origins. The clan name belongs to the whole wandering community. The generator adds a clan name from the same style to each Dalish name.

Why do Qunari characters have titles instead of names?

Under the Qun, everyone has a role, and the role is their name. A soldier is a sten, a leader the Arishok, a priest the Ariqun. Personal names are for those outside the Qun. The generator can give either, depending on whether your Qunari still follows it.

    What are Fereldan noble titles?

Ferelden's nobility, from highest, are king, teyrn, arl and bann. A teyrn rules a large region, an arl a smaller one, and a bann a local holding. The generator attaches these titles to some Fereldan names, as in Arl Teagan of Redcliffe.

Can I use these names for my Inquisitor or Warden?

Yes. The generator is ideal for naming player characters in Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age II, Inquisition and The Veilguard. Pick the race and origin you plan to play and generate until a name fits.
