How the Dragonlance Name Generator works

A Dragonlance name generator for epic dragon-war fantasy in D&D. Dragonlance-style stories follow solemn knights sworn to honour, curious kender who borrow everything, mages who wear white, red or black robes, reptilian draconians and the officers of evil dragonarmies. Generate names for all five and build a cast for a war of dragons.

How the Dragonlance name generator works

Each people in a Dragonlance-style world has a clear naming voice. Knights get solemn medieval names and honourable surnames, Truesteel, Helmward, and belong to an order such as the Rose or the Sword. Kender, the small, fearless wanderers who pick up anything not nailed down, get playful names and mischievous surnames like Quickpouch and Tumblefoot. Mages are named with the colour of their robe, white for good, red for neutral, black for evil. Draconians, the dragon-born soldiers of the enemy, get harsh, clipped names. Dragonarmy officers get a rank and the colour of their dragon wing.

    Kender names

Kender names are the most fun to generate, because the surname is a joke about the kender's habits. Give a kender a pouch-related surname and the rest of the party will check their pockets whenever the kender is near.

    FAQ

What do kender names sound like?

Cheerful and a little silly. First names are short and friendly, like Tolly or Nixie, and surnames joke about pockets, feet and wandering, like Quickpouch or Wanderfoot. They should sound harmless, which is exactly what makes kender dangerous to your belongings.

What do the robe colours mean?

In Dragonlance-style settings, mages belong to one of three orders: white robes for good, red for neutrality and black for evil. The Robed mage mode puts the colour in the name so other characters know where the mage stands.

    How are draconians named?

With harsh, clipped names, often one or two syllables, like Greshak or Zul'arr. Draconians are soldiers made from dragon eggs, so the names are functional and a little inhuman. Adding a role, like the Scout, helps in combat.

Can I use these outside Dragonlance?

Yes. The names are original and fit any fantasy war with knightly orders, dragon armies and mage orders sorted by allegiance, in D&D or any other fantasy system.
