How the Eberron Name Generator works

An Eberron name generator for D&D's world of pulp adventure and magical industry. Eberron mixes noir detectives, lightning rails and airships with great families whose members carry dragonmarks, magical birthmarks that grant them power and business monopolies. Generate names for dragonmarked heirs, human nationals, inquisitives, airship officers and trading houses.

How the Eberron name generator works

Eberron names are a little more modern than classic fantasy. Given names are short and practical, Dask, Kessa, Tarren, like names from a 1920s adventure serial. Members of the dragonmarked houses use the prefix d' before their house name, so the generator's heir mode gives names like Kessa d'Vaelis or Baron Tarren d'Merrow. Human nationals sometimes carry the noble prefix ir'. Inquisitive mode adds the noir flavour, a private investigator's nickname or former job. Airship mode adds a rank and a ship. The house names here are original, so they will not clash with the published houses if you want your own.

    Dragonmarked characters

A dragonmarked character comes with family politics built in: a house, a business and relatives with opinions. Pick a house name first, then generate a few relatives with the same one, and the party has a family to deal with.

    FAQ

What do Eberron names sound like?

Short, practical and slightly modern, like characters from a pulp adventure. Given names tend toward one or two syllables. Surnames can be English-sounding, like Coldwater, or continental, like Varrel. The d' and ir' prefixes mark houses and nobility.

What does d' mean in an Eberron name?

It marks a member of a dragonmarked house who carries the family's mark or is a recognised heir. The generator uses it with original house names, like d'Vaelis, so you can build your own house or map the pattern onto a published one.

Can I generate a whole family?

Yes. Choose Dragonmarked heir, generate a batch, then keep one house and change only the first names. That gives you parents, siblings and a scheming cousin with the same house name.

    What is an inquisitive?

In Eberron, an inquisitive is a private investigator, the setting's version of a noir detective. The Inquisitive mode adds a nickname or a former job, such as Late of the Watch, which gives the character a history at a glance.
