How the Elder Scrolls-style Name Generator (Nord, Imperial, Breton, Redguard, Altmer, Bosmer, Dunmer, Orsimer, Khajiit, Argonian) works

An Elder Scrolls name generator for every playable race of Tamriel: Nord, Imperial, Breton, Redguard, Altmer, Bosmer, Dunmer, Orsimer, Khajiit and Argonian. Each race follows its own naming rules, from Nord bynames like Frost-Beard to Khajiit rank prefixes like Ma' and Argonian names like Wades-in-Shallows. Useful for Skyrim characters, mods and fan fiction.

How the Elder Scrolls name generator works

Each race in the Elder Scrolls games has a distinct naming culture. Nords take Old Norse names and family names like Battle-Born or Gray-Mane. Imperials use Roman names, Bretons French ones, and Redguards Arabic and North African sounds. The three elf races each have their own: Altmer names are long and flowing, Bosmer short and woodsy, and Dunmer often carry a Great House name like Redoran or Telvanni. The generator keeps separate tables for each race.

    Khajiit, Argonian and Orc names

Three races have special rules. Khajiit add a prefix or suffix showing rank or age, such as Ma' for a child, Ra' for an adult warrior, Do' for a proven fighter and J' for a young adult, or suffixes like -ri and -dro. Argonians often take descriptive translated names like Wades-in-Shallows or Keeps-To-Shadows, or native Jel names like Teeba-Ei. Orcs use gro- for sons and gra- for daughters before their father's or clan's name, as in Borbash gro-Durz.

    Using the names

Pick a race to generate names that fit a character in Skyrim, Oblivion or Elder Scrolls Online, or leave it on Any to build a mixed party. A few canonical names appear in the lists for flavour. This site is not affiliated with Bethesda or ZeniMax.

    FAQ

What do the Khajiit name prefixes mean?

Khajiit prefixes mark status. Ma' is a child, J' and Ja' an adolescent or young adult, Ra' an adult, Do' a warrior, Dro' an elder, and Ri' a clan leader. Suffixes like -ri or -dro can mark the same ranks. So Ma'dran is a young Khajiit and Ra'dran an adult.

    How do Argonian names work?

Argonians have native Jel names like Teeba-Ei or Heem-Jas, and many use a translated descriptive name like Wades-in-Shallows or Keeps-To-Shadows. Hyphens join the words. The generator mixes both styles so you get the right feel for a lizard folk character.

What do gro and gra mean in Orc names?

Gro- means son of and gra- means daughter of in Orcish naming, placed before the father's name or clan name. So Borbash gro-Durz is Borbash, son of Durz. Female Orcs use gra-, as in Shel gra-Largakh.

Which Dunmer houses can I use?

The Great Houses are Redoran, Telvanni, Hlaalu, Indoril and Dres, and minor houses include Sadri, Sarethi and Ienith. Each has its own reputation: Redoran for warriors, Telvanni for wizards, Hlaalu for traders. The generator pairs Dunmer names with these house names.
