How the Eldritch Entity Name Generator works

An eldritch entity name generator for cosmic horror. Cosmic horror stories are built around beings so vast and alien that their names barely fit in a human mouth. Generate outer gods, full titles, lesser servitor races and the cults that worship them, all in the spirit of the classic Mythos.

How the eldritch entity name generator works

Outer god names mix harsh consonant clusters and odd vowels, like Nyogthua or Azh'ughoth, with occasional apostrophes and hyphens to suggest a name that was never meant for human speech. The Title mode gives a god a name and a dread epithet, That Which Waits, or a nameless title like the Many-Angled Eye. Servitor mode gives lesser races and monsters that serve the gods. Cult mode names secret societies and lodges, from the Esoteric Order to the Children of a sleeping god.

    Saying the unsayable

Players will want to pronounce the name. Pick one pronunciation and let NPCs disagree about it, which adds to the sense that nobody truly understands the thing.

The original Cthulhu Mythos stories are in the public domain. This site is not affiliated with any publisher of Mythos games or fiction. Every entity and cult name here is original.

    FAQ

What makes a good eldritch name?

It should look strange and sound hard to say. Unusual consonant clusters, doubled vowels and apostrophes make a name feel alien, while a short title gives players something they can say out loud.

    Are these real Mythos gods?

No. The names are original and built to sound like classic cosmic horror entities without copying any. You can drop them into an existing Mythos campaign as newly discovered horrors.

How do I name a cult?

Pair an old-fashioned group word like Lodge or Order with a mysterious adjective and the god's name. Cults often hide behind respectable names, like the Silver Society, which makes them scarier.

Can I use these outside tabletop games?

Yes. The names are original and work in horror fiction, video games, podcasts and weird fiction of every kind, and they make good names for villains, dark gods and secret societies in fantasy too.
