How the Exandria Name Generator works

An Exandria name generator for D&D, covering the continent of Wildemount and similar actual-play inspired settings. Wildemount-style campaigns split the map between a stern, Germanic-sounding empire, a dark dynasty with apostrophe names and a coastal alliance of free cities. Generate empire citizens, dynasty members, coastal folk, adventuring parties and towns.

How the Exandria name generator works

Each region has its own sound. The empire uses German given names and surnames, Heinrich Falkenrath, with ranks and military titles for its officers and scholars. The dynasty uses short syllables joined by apostrophes, Vel'ira, plus epithets tied to the moon and shadow, which suits a nation of drow and goblinoids. The coastal free cities use seafaring names and salty surnames, Marisol Tidewell, and captains are known by their ship. Adventuring parties get a slightly self-deprecating group name, the Unlikely Misfits. Towns combine simple English-sounding parts.

    Picking a region

A character's name tells the table where they are from. An empire-born cleric with a German name who ends up among the dynasty will feel out of place, which is a good story hook.

    FAQ

What do Exandria names sound like?

It depends on the region. Wildemount's empire sounds German, the dynasty uses short syllables with apostrophes, and the coastal cities sound nautical. Other parts of the world have more classic fantasy names.

How do I name a character from the empire?

Use a German first name and surname, like Liesl Morgenstern or Albrecht Vollmer. Soldiers and officials often add a title. The Empire citizen mode builds names in all three styles.

How should an adventuring party be named?

Actual-play parties often have humble, funny or accidental names. The Adventuring party mode gives you names like the Crooked Wayfarers or the Unlikely Oddities, which sound like something a group would end up with by accident.

Can I use these outside Exandria?

Yes. The names are original and fit any setting with a stern empire, a shadowy rival nation and a coastal league of trading cities, in D&D or any other system.
