How the Faction Name Generator works

A faction name generator for fantasy worldbuilding and RPG campaigns. Factions are the groups that want power, money or change, and their struggles give players sides to choose. Pick a political, military, merchant, criminal or reform faction and generate a name for your campaign's power players.

How the faction name generator works

Political factions pair a loyalty with a body, the Crown Party or the Commons Council, so players know who they stand for. Military factions pair a hard word with a force, the Iron Host or the Border Marshals. Merchant factions name the goods they control, the Salt League or the Amber Compact, because money is their weapon. Criminal factions use street names, the Quiet Hand or the Velvet Knives, for smugglers and thieves. Reform factions sound hopeful, the New Dawn Movement or Bread and Bells, for groups pushing change. For trade and craft groups, try the fantasy guild name generator.

    Factions need goals

A faction name is only the start. Give each one a clear goal and a rival, and the campaign will generate its own plots.

    FAQ

What is a faction in an RPG?

A faction is an organised group with its own goals, leaders and resources. Players can join, help, oppose or betray factions, and the struggle between them drives much of the story in open-world and political campaigns.

How many factions should a campaign have?

Three to five factions is a good number. It is enough for alliances, rivalries and betrayals, but still small enough for players to remember who is who and what each group wants from them.

How do I make factions feel different?

Give each faction a different kind of power, such as money, soldiers, secrets or public support. Their names, colours and symbols should reflect that power, so players can tell them apart at a glance.

Can I use these names in my game?

Yes. The names are original and free to use in tabletop campaigns, strategy games, fantasy novels and video games. Pair them with leaders from the NPC name generator and mottos from the family motto generator.
