How the Fae Name Generator works

This fae name generator makes names for the fey of folklore, D&D's Feywild and fantasy novels: Lirael of the Dawn Court, Mabh Thornheart, Lady Vesper of the Black Briar, and secret true names like Sylrathion. Choose Seelie, Unseelie or a true name. No repeats in a batch.

Seelie and Unseelie in the fae name generator

Scottish folklore splits the fair folk into two courts. The Seelie Court, from an old word for "blessed", is the brighter one, though still dangerous. The Unseelie Court gathers the darker, crueller fey. The generator gives Seelie fae light, flowery names tied to dawn and summer, and Unseelie fae thorny names tied to night, winter and frost. D&D's Summer and Winter Courts follow the same split.

    True names

In many tales, knowing a fae's true name gives power over it. That is why the fey hide their names behind titles and nicknames. The True name option makes flowing, hard-to-guess names with odd breaks like Ith'oraris. Give a fae a common name the party uses and keep the true name as a secret worth a quest.

    Courts, titles and company

Fae love rank: a Lady of the Hawthorn Ring or a Prince of the Moonless Hill. For smaller fey use the fairy name generator, for tree spirits the dryad name generator, and for their kin the elf name generator.

    FAQ

What is the difference between fae, fey and fairy?

They overlap. "Fae" and "fey" are both used for the whole otherworldly race, and D&D spells it "fey". "Fairy" often means the small winged kind, though older folklore uses it for all of them. Fae and fey names here suit tall, courtly beings more than tiny ones.

Why do fae hide their names?

Folklore holds that a true name binds its owner. Rumpelstiltskin loses his power when the miller's daughter learns his name. Fae in stories use titles and nicknames to stay safe, which makes a true name a valuable secret.

Can a fae be both Seelie and Unseelie?

Some stories have fae who switch courts, are exiled from one or belong to neither. Mixing a light given name with a dark surname, such as Elowen Thornheart, is a quick way to hint at a fae caught between courts.
