How the Fantasy Gem Name Generator works

This fantasy gem name generator invents gemstones and magic crystals for D&D loot and worldbuilding: embrite, starglass, voidopal, stormberyl, plus famous jewels like the Heart of the Drowned King. Choose a gemstone, a magic crystal or a famous jewel.

How the fantasy gem name generator invents stones

Real gem names follow patterns. Many end in -ite (malachite, rhodonite), -ine (tourmaline) or -yx (onyx), and many are named for a colour or place. The generator uses the same endings with invented stems, so embrite and velalite sound like real minerals. It also pairs colours with real gem words to give stones like dusk garnet or frost beryl.

    Magic crystals

In fantasy, crystals often store power: mana, souls, starlight. Magic crystal names state what the crystal does, so soulshard or runeprism tells the party at a glance what they found. They work as spell components, crafting materials or the thing every faction is mining for.

    Famous jewels

A treasure with a name has a story. The Koh-i-Noor ("mountain of light") and the Hope Diamond both gathered legends of curses. Famous jewel names do the same: the Weeping Eye or the Tear of Seven Winters. For the hoard around it, try the fantasy weapon name generator and the fantasy potion name generator, and for the miners, the dwarf name generator.

    FAQ

How do I price an invented gem in D&D?

Match it to a real gem tier. A common-sounding stone like ash agate fits the 10 to 50 gp range, a rare-sounding one like starglass might be 500 gp or more, and a named jewel is priceless or a quest reward. Being consistent matters more than the exact number.

    Are these real gemstones?

The two-part invented names, such as embrite or thalyx, are made up. Colour-plus-stone names use real gem words like garnet and opal with a fantasy colour, so they read as rare varieties of real stones.

What makes a famous jewel memorable?

A body part or emotion, and an owner. "The Eye of" or "the Tear of" makes a jewel feel alive, and naming a dead king or a dragon gives the party someone to ask about, or someone who wants it back.
