How the Fantasy Month Name Generator works

This fantasy month name generator fills a worldbuilding calendar with months like Frostfall, Bloomtide, Harvestmoon and Deepwinter, or older-sounding names like Mirtul and Elarion. Pick a season or the old-tongue style. Each batch avoids repeats.

How the fantasy month name generator names months

Most real month names began as farming or religious markers. The Anglo-Saxons had Solmonath (February, "mud month"), Blotmonath (November, "blood month", when animals were slaughtered) and Hrethmonath for a spring goddess. The generator follows that habit, naming months after what happens in them, thaw, bloom, harvest, frost, then adding endings like -tide, -fall and -moon.

    Season names and old-tongue names

Season names are easy for players to remember, since Frostfall clearly means winter. Old-tongue names such as Thararion or Kalmir sound like a language spoken in your world, the way the Forgotten Realms calendar has Mirtul and Eleasis. A good approach is to give each month an old name and a common nickname, and let characters use either.

    Building a full calendar

Twelve months is only a habit. A world with a different moon or year might have ten, thirteen or twenty. Pair your months with festivals and coins from the fantasy currency name generator, and date a quest with the fantasy tavern name generator for where the party meets.

    FAQ

How many months should a fantasy calendar have?

As many as suits your world. Earth's twelve come from the moon's cycle fitting about twelve times into a year. A world with two moons or a longer year might have more. Fewer, longer months also work and feel less familiar.

Should fantasy months follow the seasons?

It helps players. If a month is called Frostfall, they know to pack warm clothes. Old-tongue names can break that link and add mystery, but give the table a quick way to tell which season it is.

Can I mix season and old-tongue names?

Yes. Many worlds have both: the scholarly name used in records and a folk name used by farmers. Generate a set of each, then pair them up, so Harvestmoon might also be called Delos in temple calendars.
