How the Fantasy Religion Name Generator works
A fantasy religion name generator for worldbuilding. Religions shape laws, holidays, wars and daily life in any fantasy world. Pick an organised church, a nature faith, ancestor worship, a philosophy or an old pantheon and generate a name for the beliefs your characters live by.
How the fantasy religion name generator works
Organised churches get formal institutional names, the Covenant of the Undying Flame or the Temple of the Merciful Mother, for faiths with priests, buildings and politics. Nature faiths get simple names ending in Way, the Green Way or the Old Root Way, for druids and village traditions. Ancestor worship names describe remembrance, the Hearth of Those Before, for cultures that honour the dead. Philosophies add ism to an invented root, Temperism or Kaldrism, for belief systems without gods. Old pantheons count their gods, the Seven Thrones or the Twelve Hearths. For individual deities, use the god / goddess name generator.
More than one faith
Real worlds have many beliefs side by side. Give your setting a main church, a rural faith and a banned philosophy for instant tension.
FAQ
How do I name a fantasy religion?
Decide what the religion worships and how organised it is. A big church with priests needs a formal name, while a village tradition can have a simple one. The name should hint at the main belief or symbol.
What is the difference between a church and a faith?
A church usually means an organised institution with leaders, buildings and rules. A faith can be looser, shared by people without any central authority. Fantasy worlds are more interesting when they have both kinds side by side.
Can a religion have no gods?
Yes. Philosophies and ancestor worship can be religions without gods. They focus on how to live, how to remember the dead or how the universe works, and they can clash with god-worshipping churches in interesting ways.
Can I use these names in my world?
Yes. The names are original and free to use in tabletop campaigns, fantasy novels, video games and worldbuilding projects. Pair the religion with gods, holy orders and temples from the other fantasy generators.
