How the Fate Name Generator works

A Fate name generator for characters in any genre, plus aspect ideas. Fate is a flexible narrative system where characters are defined by aspects, short phrases like a high concept and a trouble. Generate character names, high concept phrases and trouble aspects to spark a new character.

How the Fate name generator works

The Character mode gives genre-neutral names that fit pulp, fantasy or sci-fi, like Cora Holloway or Silas Crane. The High concept mode combines an adjective and a role, Disgraced Duellist, or a role with a twist, Pilot with a Talking Sword. The Trouble mode gives a complication phrased in first person, the way Fate aspects often are, like I Can't Say No to a Bet.

    Aspects first

In Fate, the aspects matter more than the name. Generate a high concept and a trouble together, then pick a name that suits them.

    FAQ

    What is a high concept?

A high concept is a short phrase that sums up who your character is, like Retired Sky Pilot. It is the most important aspect in Fate and shapes everything the character does.

    What is a trouble aspect?

A trouble is a complication that makes your character's life harder, like Always in Over My Head. It gives the GM ways to cause drama and gives you Fate points in return.

    Why are names genre-neutral?

Fate can run any genre, from pulp adventure to space opera. Genre-neutral names fit most settings, so you can use the generator whatever your group is playing this week.

Can I use these in other games?

Yes. The names and aspect ideas are original and work in any narrative game or story, and a high concept with a trouble is a handy way to sketch any character quickly.
