How the Forgotten Realms Human Name Generator works

A Forgotten Realms human name generator by ethnicity. The Forgotten Realms splits humans into nine ethnic groups, from the desert Calishites and the northern Illuskans to the Shou of the far east, and each names its children in its own style. Pick one, or leave it on Any to fill a busy port city with travellers from everywhere.

How the Forgotten Realms human name generator works

The nine human ethnicities of the Realms each echo a real-world naming tradition, and the generator keeps them apart so a Rashemi name never lands on a Tethyrian surname. Calishite names have an Arabic and Persian feel, with patronymics joined by ibn. Chondathan and Tethyrian names sound like medieval English and French. Damaran names echo Slavic languages, with endings like -ov and -sk. Illuskan names are northern and Norse, with surnames about wind, storm and the sea. Mulan names recall ancient Egypt, sometimes hyphenated. Rashemi names have a Russian and Central Asian rhythm, and Shou names put the family name first, as in Chinese. Turami names are Mediterranean, with a Spanish and Italian sound.

    Picking the right ethnicity

Where a human comes from says a lot before they say a word. A Chondathan name is the safe default for a character from the Sword Coast heartlands; an Illuskan fits someone from the cold north; a Calishite or Turami name tells the table this character travelled a long way. Use the ethnicity to hint at a backstory without spelling it out.

    FAQ

Which ethnicity should a Sword Coast human be?

Chondathan or Tethyrian are the most common along the Sword Coast, with Illuskans in the north around the port cities. Calishites and Turami come up from the south as merchants and sailors. Any of them could plausibly be in a coastal city, which is part of what makes those cities interesting.

Why do Shou names put the surname first?

The Shou follow the East Asian convention, where the family name comes before the given name. The generator keeps that order for every Shou result, so a name like Kao Mei is family name Kao and given name Mei. If your table finds it confusing, say it once at the start of the session.

Are these names from the official books?

No. The lists are written for this site in the style of each ethnicity, not copied from the Player's Handbook tables. They should feel at home in the same setting, and you can mix them freely with the names from the books.

Can I use these ethnicities outside the Forgotten Realms?

Yes. Each one maps to a broad real-world sound, so you can use Damaran for a Slavic-flavoured kingdom, Mulan for an Egyptian-style empire or Illuskan for a Norse coast in any homebrew world. Rename the ethnicities for your setting and keep the names.
