How the Forgotten Realms Name Generator works

A Forgotten Realms name generator for D&D's classic high fantasy world. The Sword Coast and the lands around it are full of frontier towns, roadside inns, mercenary companies and adventurers of every common race. Generate names for humans, elves, dwarves and halflings, plus the towns, inns and adventuring companies that fill out a campaign on the coast.

How the Forgotten Realms name generator works

The Realms have a lived-in, medieval feel, and names follow a few familiar shapes. Humans have English and Celtic-sounding given names and landscape surnames, Aldren Silverbrook, Thessa Harrowgate. Elves have flowing names and nature surnames, Ilphira Moonwhisper. Dwarves have hard, Norse-flavoured names with clan surnames or patronymics, Thorgrim Anvilbrow, Dagna, daughter of Orsik. Halflings get homely names and cosy compound surnames like Tealeaf and Goodbarrel. Towns combine two plain English parts, Wolfmere, Ravenford, and inns use the classic animal and object pattern of the tavern sign.

    A ready-made town

For a quick settlement, generate a town, an inn and a handful of humans and halflings. Name the innkeeper from the human list, give the inn its sign, and the party has a base for the session.

    FAQ

What do Forgotten Realms names sound like?

Classic high fantasy. Humans sound English or Celtic, elves sound flowing and musical, dwarves sound Norse and hard, and halflings sound cosy and rural. Places are usually plain English compounds that describe the land.

How is this different from the Forgotten Realms human name generator?

That page focuses only on humans and the different human ethnic styles of the Realms. This page covers several races plus towns, inns and adventuring companies, so it is the quicker choice for filling in a whole region.

How do I name an inn on the Sword Coast?

Use an animal or an object with an adjective, like the Laughing Griffon or the Rusty Flagon, or the owner's name, like Corwin's Rest. Inn signs were pictures, so the name should be easy to paint.

Can I name the party's adventuring company?

Yes. The Adventuring company mode gives names like the Iron Lanterns or the Company of the Spurs. Generate a batch and let the party vote.
