How the Giff Name Generator works

A giff name generator for D&D's hippo folk, the gun-loving, rank-obsessed mercenaries of Spelljammer. Giff take military life extremely seriously, so a giff name is incomplete without a rank, and ideally a regiment and a battle honour. The names are grand and a little pompous, which is exactly right.

How the giff name generator works

Giff are large hippo-headed people who love order, uniforms, firearms and above all rank. They take grand, old-fashioned first names like Horatio and Hortensia and hearty surnames about thunder, mud and toughness. Every giff wants a rank, and a giff without one tends to invent it. The Regiment mode adds the unit they serve with, and Honour gives a decoration or a battle they are famous for. The effect is a proud, slightly comic military officer who is also genuinely formidable in a fight.

    Giff characters

Giff are best played with total sincerity. A giff introducing themselves as Brigadier Wellington Thunderbelly of the Royal Mudguards, twice decorated, should mean every word of it.

    FAQ

Why do giff care so much about rank?

In D&D lore, giff culture is built around military service. Rank is status, and a giff's rank tells others how to treat them. Giff often promote themselves or each other in the absence of an army. A rank is the most important part of a giff name.

What first names suit a giff?

Grand, old-fashioned names with a whiff of the officers' mess: Bartholomew, Montague, Winifred, Augustus. They should sound like they belong on a regimental portrait. Pair them with a sturdy surname and a rank for the full effect.

    What are giff battle honours?

Decorations and famous battles a giff is proud of. Giff love to mention them, often unprompted. The Honour mode adds one, either a decoration or "hero of" a battle. They work well as running jokes, since the battle can be as obscure as you like.

Can I use giff names for other military characters?

Yes. The pompous officer style suits any comic or proud military character, from a dwarf colonel to a goblin general who promoted himself. The ranks and regiments are original and fit any fantasy army with gunpowder or without.
