How the Githyanki Name Generator works

This githyanki name generator makes harsh, clipped names for the astral raiders of D&D: Zar'ith, Kaasra, Tr'zaan, Vlaakai the Dragonrider. Choose a plain given name, a name with a war title, or a knight or captain with a rank and a ship or fortress, and pick female, male or either.

How a githyanki name generator builds names

Published githyanki names share a sound: short syllables, doubled vowels, hard consonants and the odd apostrophe. Their god-queen is Vlaakith, their capital Tu'narath, their ranks kith'rak and sarth. The generator joins harsh openings like "Zar", "Kr" and "Vla" to endings like "ith", "rak" and "sha", sometimes splitting them with an apostrophe. The results sound related to the canon names without copying them, so your character will not share a name with a book villain.

    Titles and ranks

Githyanki society is a military one, and many characters are known by their deeds. War titles like "Mindflayer-Bane" or "Hunter of Illithids" point back to the race's ancient war against their former masters. Ranks give structure to an NPC crew: a kith'rak commands, a gish blends sword and spell, a sarth is a senior commander. Ships and fortresses round out a raiding party.

    Gith names in play

If a player wants a githzerai instead, soften the sound with more vowels and fewer hard stops, since githzerai are monks rather than raiders. For the illithid masters themselves, the monster name generator and demon name generator cover similar ground.

    FAQ

    Do githyanki use surnames?

Not in the published lore. They go by a single given name and add a title or rank earned in battle. That is why the generator offers war titles and ranks rather than family names.

What do the apostrophes mean in githyanki names?

Nothing official. They mark a hard break between syllables, the way canon names like Tu'narath and kith'rak do, and they make a name look alien on the page. Drop them if the name reads better without.

Can I use these names for a githyanki player character?

Yes. The names are original, so they will not clash with an established NPC. Pick Given name for a young warrior and add a title later in the campaign, once the character has earned one at the table.
