How the Harpy Name Generator works

This harpy name generator makes names for the bird-women of Greek myth, D&D and fantasy: Aellira, Kelaino, Ocythra the Snatcher, Zelix Stormwing. Choose a harpy name, a name with a cruel title, or a flock name like the Storm Talons. Each batch avoids duplicates.

What a harpy name generator borrows from myth

In Greek myth, harpies were winged spirits who snatched people and food away, and the word itself comes from "harpazein", to snatch. The named harpies were Aello ("storm swift"), Ocypete ("swift wing"), Celaeno ("the dark one") and Podarge ("swift foot"). The generator mixes their sounds, so the results feel like sisters of those four without copying them outright.

    Titles and flocks

Harpies in D&D lure travellers with a beautiful song, then attack. Titles lean into that mix of lure and cruelty: the Singer, the Snatcher, the Carrion Queen. Epithets such as Rattletalon or Bonefeather describe a harpy in one word for quick use at the table. Harpies hunt in groups, so a flock name like "the Rookery of the High Crags" turns a random encounter into a known threat.

    Pairing with other monsters

Harpies nest in cliffs and ruins, often near other flying horrors. For a crumbling tower full of stone watchers, try the gargoyle name generator, and for wider monster ideas the monster name generator.

    FAQ

What were the names of the harpies in Greek myth?

Hesiod names Aello and Ocypete. Later writers add Celaeno, and Homer mentions Podarge, mother of Achilles' horses. They were sisters, daughters of Thaumas and Electra, and the gods sent them to torment King Phineus by stealing his food.

Can a harpy be a player character?

Some settings allow winged bird-folk player characters, and a plain harpy name works for them. Drop the cruel titles and pick a softer name, or keep a title the character is trying to live down for a ready-made backstory.

    Are harpy names always female?

Myth and most games describe harpies as female, so these names lean that way. If your setting has male harpies, the shorter names and the one-word epithets work for anyone.
