How the Hyperdrive Name Generator works

This hyperdrive name generator names how ships cross the galaxy: drive brands such as the Kessler K-9 Jumpdrive, faster-than-light technologies such as the Tachyon Fold Engine or Casimir Bubble Drive, and the slang pilots use for jumping, punching it or folding.

How the hyperdrive name generator works

Every space setting needs faster-than-light travel, and naming the drive is a quick way to set its rules. The Drive technology kind combines a physics-sounding word, tachyon, Casimir, negative-mass, with how the drive works: folding space, warping it, slipping into another dimension, or riding a bubble like the real Alcubierre warp proposal. The Drive brand kind names a product, because in a lived-in future drives are bought, sold and repaired. Jump slang is what crews say instead of engineering terms.

    Choosing how your FTL works

The kind of drive shapes every plot. A jump drive moves instantly but needs to cool down, so ships can be trapped. A warp drive moves fast but takes time, so travel becomes a journey. Lanes and gates restrict where ships can go, so whoever controls the routes holds power. Pick one rule and keep to it, then name it.

    FAQ

What is the difference between a hyperdrive and a warp drive?

In most fiction a hyperdrive moves a ship into another dimension, hyperspace, where distances are shorter, while a warp drive bends normal space around the ship. Star Wars uses hyperdrives and Star Trek uses warp drives.

    Is any faster-than-light drive real?

No working drive exists. The Alcubierre metric, published in 1994, shows that warping space is allowed by general relativity on paper, but it needs exotic negative energy that may not exist.

Can I use these drive names in my game?

Yes. The brands and technologies are invented combinations of physics words, and Alcubierre is the name of a real physicist's published idea. The slang is ordinary English.
