How the Legion Name Generator works
A legion name generator for armies in fantasy, historical and sci-fi settings. A legion's name carries its history, from famous victories to the frontier it guards. Pick a numbered legion, a dark host, an undead legion or an elite cohort and generate a name for your army.
How the legion name generator works
Numbered legions follow the Roman style, a number and an epithet, the Ninth Legion Ironclad or the Seventh Legion of the Border, which sounds disciplined and ancient. Dark hosts use grim colours and words, the Ashen Host or the Howling Host, for invading armies. Undead legions describe what the soldiers have become, the Legion of Bone and Banner or the Legion of the Drowned. Elite cohorts are smaller named units, the Gilded Cohort or the Silver-Shield Cohort, for bodyguards and shock troops. For smaller raiding bands, try the warband name generator.
Epithets earned
Historical legions earned their epithets from battles and emperors. Give each legion one story that explains its title.
FAQ
How were Roman legions named?
Roman legions had a number and usually an epithet, a title that came from a victory, a founder or a region. Many legions shared numbers, so the epithet helped tell them apart, which is a useful idea for fantasy armies too.
What is a cohort?
A cohort was a smaller unit within a Roman legion, usually a few hundred soldiers. In fantasy, a named cohort often means an elite group, like a royal guard or a unit of veteran shock troops.
What makes a good undead legion name?
Undead legion names should describe what the soldiers have become or how they died. Words like restless, drowned and silent create an eerie mood and hint at the curse or necromancy that raised them.
Can I use these names in my game?
Yes. The names are original and free to use in tabletop campaigns, wargames, fantasy and sci-fi novels, and strategy games. Pair them with a battle name from the battle name generator for a full military history.
