How the Mentor Name Generator works
A mentor name generator for wise elders, old masters and teachers. Every hero needs someone to teach them, warn them and possibly die at the worst moment. Pick an old wizard, a retired warrior, a hermit sage, a village grandmother or a master and generate a name for your mentor.
How the mentor name generator works
Old wizards get a classic, slightly grand name and a gentle epithet, Casimir the Patient or Merriel the Far-Seeing. Retired warriors are simply called Old plus their name, Old Hildegard or Old Grimbold, because everyone in town knows who they are. Hermit sages are named after the strange place they live, Idris of the Salt Cave, which also tells the hero where to find them. Village grandmothers are called Granny plus a herb, Granny Nettle, for the kindly elder who knows far more than she lets on. Masters are addressed by title, Master Imre, for martial arts and craft teachers.
The mentor's fate
Mentors often leave the story early so the hero must stand alone. A memorable name makes that loss hit harder.
FAQ
What makes a good mentor name?
A good mentor name sounds older and calmer than the hero's name. Soft, classic names and a gentle title like the Patient show wisdom, while nicknames like Old Grimbold show that the whole village knows and trusts them.
Why do mentors have titles?
Titles show respect and experience. Calling someone Master or Granny tells the reader how other characters see them, and an epithet like the Wandering hints at their history without needing a long explanation.
Should the mentor die?
It is a classic choice, because it forces the hero to grow up. But mentors can also leave, betray the hero, turn out to be wrong or simply retire. Any of these can work if it pushes the hero forward.
Can I use these names in my game?
Yes. The names are original and free to use in tabletop campaigns, novels, video games and short stories. Pair a mentor with a trait and a secret from the other character generators to give them real depth.
