How the Norse Mythology Name Generator works
A Norse mythology name generator for the Aesir and Vanir, giants, valkyries and dwarves. Names are built from the elements Old Norse names were actually made from, hrafn, sig, gunn, hild, ulf, and come with a tribe, a domain or a kenning. Pick a kind and a gender and generate up to a hundred.
How the Norse mythology name generator builds names
Old Norse names are usually two elements joined. The first sets a theme, hrafn (raven), sig (victory), gunn (battle), ulf (wolf), thor (the god), ing (the god Yngvi); the second finishes the name, -hild (battle), -run (secret), -dis (goddess), -geir (spear), -mund (protection), -bjorn (bear). Sigrun is "victory secret", Hrafnhild is "raven battle". The generator follows that pattern, with separate element tables for giants and dwarves, whose names in the Eddas sound harsher and older.
Kennings and bynames
Norse poetry rarely called anything by its plain name. A ship was a wave-horse, gold was Freyja's tears, a ruler was a ring-giver. Gods collected dozens of these kennings and bynames. The generator adds one to some god names, which is the fastest way to make a new figure feel like it has a whole cycle of lost poems behind it.
Kinds of figure
The Aesir are the war and rule gods of Asgard, the Vanir the fertility and sea gods, and the two tribes fought before making peace. Jotnar, the giants, are the old forces of frost, fire and stone. Valkyries choose the slain and carry them to Valhalla, where they become the einherjar. Dwarves live in the mountain roots and forge the gods' treasures; the Eddas list dozens of dwarf names, and the dwarf tables echo their sound.
For everyday Viking-age names rather than mythic ones, use the Old Norse name page; for fantasy dwarves in general, the dwarf name page.
FAQ
Are these real Norse gods?
Mostly they are new names built from real Old Norse elements, so they fit alongside Odin, Freyja and Tyr without copying them. The elements themselves are attested in runestones and sagas, which is why the results feel authentic even when no poem mentions them.
What is a kenning?
A kenning is a poetic nickname made of two or more words that describe something indirectly, such as whale-road for the sea or raven-feeder for a warrior. Gods had many of them. The generator adds kennings like ring-giver or rune-reader to hint at a god's role.
What is the difference between the Aesir and the Vanir?
They are the two families of Norse gods. The Aesir, led by Odin, are associated with war, rule and wisdom. The Vanir, including Njord, Freyr and Freyja, are tied to fertility, wealth and the sea. After a war they exchanged hostages, which is why some Vanir live in Asgard.
Why do the giant names sound different?
The Eddas give giants names with heavier sounds, Thrym, Hrungnir, Thjazi, Ymir, often built from words for noise, cold or roaring. The generator uses separate element tables for jotnar so they sound older and rougher than the gods, as they do in the sources.
