How the Numenera Name Generator works

A Numenera name generator for far-future science fantasy. Numenera-style games are set a billion years from now, on a world built on the ruins of eight lost civilizations, where ancient technology seems like magic. Generate characters, strange places, relics and creatures.

How the Numenera name generator works

Characters get flowing invented names, often soft and strange, like Aelith or Lorumsarro, since the far future has languages of its own. Places get dreamlike descriptive names, the Singing Obelisk, or invented names that feel ancient. Relics are named for what they seem to do, a Humming Lens or a Folding Cube, because no one really knows how they work. Creatures get alien-sounding names.

    Weird but wondrous

The setting is about discovery and wonder. Names should feel strange and beautiful, never grim.

    FAQ

What do Numenera names sound like?

Soft, flowing and invented, like Qaeyn or Syniel, with none of the familiar Earth names. They should sound as if they come from a language that is nothing like our own.

How do I name a relic?

Describe what it seems to do or look like, like a Weeping Sphere or a Dreaming Needle. In a world of ancient machines, people name things by their effects, not their true purpose.

    How should places be named?

Many places have poetic, descriptive names, like the Floating Spire, because they are strange ruins that people could only describe. Others have invented names that sound very old.

Can I use these in other science fantasy games?

Yes. The names are original and fit any science fantasy, far-future or dying-earth game or story, from tabletop campaigns to novels and video games full of ancient ruins and strange technology.
