How the Pathfinder Automaton Name Generator works

A Pathfinder automaton name generator for living constructs. Automatons were built long ago by a forgotten empire and have since woken to their own minds. Many still carry an old designation, while others choose a new name that reflects who they have become.

How the Pathfinder automaton name generator works

There are three modes. Designation builds the kind of code a construct was given by its makers, a Latin-sounding function word and a number, like Custos-44 or Model Lumen VII. Chosen name gives the name an automaton picks for itself after awakening, often a virtue or a simple object like Patience, Lantern or Tock. Maker's mark combines the two, so you can show both where a construct came from and who it has chosen to be.

    Old code, new self

The gap between a designation and a chosen name is great for roleplay. An automaton that still answers to Warden-12 feels very different from one that insists on being called Wren.

    FAQ

What is an automaton in Pathfinder?

An automaton is a playable ancestry of ancient constructs with a soul bound inside a mechanical body. They were built by a lost civilisation and many are searching for purpose in a world that has moved on.

Should my automaton use a code or a name?

Either works. A code suits an automaton still bound to its old purpose, while a chosen name suits one that has found its own identity. Many characters use both at different times.

What makes a good chosen name?

Simple words work well, a virtue like Patience or Verity, an object like Lantern or Quill, or a sound like Tock. They feel like something a newly awakened mind would pick.

Can I use these for robots and golems?

Yes. The names are original and work for any construct, golem, warforged-style character, clockwork servant or friendly robot in any fantasy, science-fantasy or steampunk game.
