How the Pathfinder Place Name Generator works

A Pathfinder town name generator that also names cities and nations. A Pathfinder-style world has a patchwork of frontier villages, sprawling ports and rival empires, and each place needs a name that sounds lived-in.

How the Pathfinder town name generator works

Towns get plain, English-sounding compounds from local features, Sandpoint or Thornford, sometimes with Crossing or Old attached. Cities get grander invented names from rolling syllables, Kordor or Velimar, and can gain a nickname like City of Bridges or a Port prefix. Nations get a government type as well as a name, the Free Republic of Ostenna or the Iron Kingdom, and can also be named with a country-style ending.

    Making a region

Generate a nation first, then a couple of cities and a handful of towns. Using the same syllables for a nation and its capital makes the map feel connected.

    FAQ

How should a small town be named?

Name it after something nearby: a river, a hill, a mill or a crossing. Plain compound names like Rookmere or Millbrook feel natural and are easy for players to remember.

What makes a city name sound grand?

Longer invented names with rolling syllables sound older and more important. Adding a nickname like City of Bells gives the city a reputation before the players even arrive.

How do I name a nation?

Pair a name with a government type, like the Holy Theocracy of Zarimar. The government type tells players at once how the nation is run and hints at its politics.

Can I use these for other fantasy maps?

Yes. The names are original and fit any fantasy world map, whether for Pathfinder, D&D, a homebrew setting or a novel, from tiny frontier villages to sprawling empires.
