How the Planescape Name Generator works

A Planescape name generator for D&D adventures across the planes. The planes are a multiverse of realms built from belief, joined by portals and gate-towns, and their capital is a city of doors full of wards, factions and taverns. Generate street and ward names, gate-towns, planar realms, faction halls and tavern or shop names with a planar, slang-flecked flavour.

How the Planescape name generator works

Planar names come in two moods. City names are street-level and gritty, full of the cant planewalkers speak: the Ragpicker Row in the Gallows Ward, the Leaky Portal tavern, Old Mag's Keys and Doors. Planar names are big and philosophical, because on the outer planes a place is shaped by the ideas of those who believe in it: the Clockwork Citadel of Order, the Howling Wastes of Chaos. Gate-towns, which sit where the Outlands meet each outer plane, get invented proper names that sound halfway between a town and the idea it borders. Faction halls name the headquarters of the philosophical factions that argue over what the multiverse means.

    Using planar names in play

Planescape rewards names with attitude. Every tavern keeper has an opinion about the multiverse and every street name has a story. Give the players an odd name and let them ask why it is called that.

    FAQ

What do Planescape names sound like?

Two ways. City names are gritty and slangy, with words like Hive, Chant and Clueless. Planar names are grand and abstract, naming an idea such as Order, Chaos or Mercy. Mixing both gives the setting its mix of streetwise and cosmic.

    What is a gate-town?

A town in the Outlands built around a portal to one of the outer planes. Each gate-town takes on the character of the plane it leads to. The generator gives them invented proper names like Varnane or Quorium, so you can decide which plane each one borders.

    Can I name faction headquarters?

Yes. The Faction hall mode names the halls and courts of philosophical factions, like the Hall of Entropy or the Lodge of the Seekers. The faction names are original stand-ins you can rename to match your game.

Do these work for other planar or multiverse settings?

Yes. The names are original, and a city of doors, a realm of pure law or a tavern for travellers between worlds fits any multiverse campaign, fantasy or science fiction.
