How the Ravenloft Name Generator works

A Ravenloft name generator for gothic horror in D&D. Ravenloft-style campaigns borrow from Eastern European folklore and Victorian horror novels, with fearful villagers, cursed nobles, travelling fortune tellers and castles on the hill. Generate villagers, dark lords, travellers, villages and castles to fill a land trapped in mist.

How the Ravenloft name generator works

Gothic horror names come from the same corner of the imagination as classic vampire stories. Villagers get Eastern and Central European given names and surnames, Irina Varga, Radu Kolar, often with their job, because in a small village everyone is known by what they do. Dark lords get a noble title and a heavy aristocratic surname, frequently with von, plus an epithet that hints at their curse. Travellers get names that sound like a wandering people of fortune tellers and performers. Villages end in -ovia, -stadt or -grad, and castles take the lord's surname.

    Building a gothic village

A horror adventure works best in a small, closed place. Generate a village, a castle, a dark lord and five villagers with jobs, the burgomaster, the priest, the gravedigger, and the party has a setting and a cast of suspects.

    FAQ

What do Ravenloft names sound like?

Eastern and Central European, with a gothic edge. Villagers sound Romanian, Slavic or German. Nobles sound heavy and old, with titles like Count and Baroness. Place names end in -ovia, -stadt or -grad.

How do I name a dark lord?

Give them a title, a first name and a noble house, then an epithet about their curse. The Dark lord mode builds names like Countess Magda von Karnstadt or Viktor Morvath, the Weeping Count. The epithet is what the villagers whisper.

Why do villagers have jobs in their names?

In a small village, people are known by their role. The gravedigger, the burgomaster and the priest are key characters in gothic horror, so the Villager mode sometimes adds the job to hint at a story.

Can I use these for other horror games?

Yes. The names are original and fit any gothic horror setting, from vampire tales to cursed villages, in D&D or any other system, including one-shot horror nights.
