How the Roman Mythology Name Generator works
A Roman mythology name generator for gods and goddesses, household spirits and legendary heroes. The names are built from Latin roots with Latin endings and carry the titles Romans actually gave their deities, Pater, Mater, Victrix, Invictus. Pick a kind and gender and generate as many as you need.
How the Roman mythology name generator works
Latin names are mostly a meaningful root with a grammatical ending. Aur is gold, luc is light, silv is forest, fulgur is lightning, ferr is iron, flor is flower, fort is luck. Feminine names end in -a, -ia, -ina, -illa, -entia; masculine ones in -us, -ius, -inus, -anus. The generator joins the two, so Aurentia reads as a goddess of gold or dawn and Silvanus is a real forest god who happens to fall out of the tables too.
The Roman way of naming gods
Roman religion had more small gods than big ones. Beside Jupiter and Juno there were deities for doorways, hinges, boundary stones, the first sowing and the second ploughing, each called on for one job. That is why the domains here are specific, and often domestic. Romans also added titles to set out what aspect of a god they meant: Jupiter Stator held the line in battle, Venus Genetrix was the mother of the Roman people. The title list gives the same effect.
Household spirits
Every Roman home had its lares, guardians of the family, its penates, who looked after the storeroom, and a genius, the spirit of the head of the household. The dead were the manes, and restless ones the lemures. Choosing Household spirit gives one of these with the place it guards, useful for a quieter, local kind of magic.
For the Greek originals many Roman gods were borrowed from, see the Greek mythology page; for everyday Romans with praenomen, nomen and cognomen, the Latin Roman name page.
FAQ
Are Roman gods just Greek gods with new names?
Partly. The major Olympians were matched to Roman gods, so Zeus became Jupiter and Athena Minerva, but Rome also kept native gods with no Greek twin, like Janus of doorways and Terminus of boundaries. This generator leans on that native, practical side of Roman religion.
What do the Latin roots mean?
Aur means gold, luc light, silv forest, fulgur lightning, ferr iron, flor flower, aquil eagle, terr earth, sol sun, lun moon, nox night, vent wind, ign fire, fort luck, stell star and font a spring. Most results can be read as a small Latin description of the god.
What are Pater and Mater?
They are titles meaning father and mother, added to gods as a mark of respect and authority, as in Mars Pater or Terra Mater. Other titles describe a role: Victrix means victorious, Custos guardian, Ultor avenger, Tonans the thunderer. They make a generated name sound like a cult title.
Can I use these names commercially?
Yes. Roman mythology and Latin are public domain, and these names are generated from roots, not taken from a modern novel or game. For anything you plan to trademark, search the name first, since short Latin words are popular for brands.
