How the RPG Character Name Generator works

A RPG character name generator that gives you a name, a race, a class and an epithet in one line, ready for the top of a character sheet. Pick a class, or leave it on Any to roll a random character concept: a gnome warlock sworn to the Archfey, a half-orc cleric, a dwarf rogue with a nickname.

How the RPG character name generator works

Every result combines three things: a personal name drawn from all the core races, a race, and a class with a class-flavoured epithet. The epithets follow how players actually talk about their characters. Barbarians get fierce nicknames, bards get stage names, clerics are named for their god or their order, druids and rangers are named for the wild places they come from, rogues get street names, and wizards get titles and a school. Warlocks carry the name of their patron, because the pact is the most important thing about them.

Using it for a character concept

When you are stuck on what to play, a random combination is a useful prompt. A dwarf bard or an elf barbarian is not the obvious pick for either race, and that tension is where interesting characters come from. Generate a batch, pick the one that makes you ask "why?", and the answer is your backstory.

    FAQ

Should my character's name match their class?

It helps, but it does not have to. The name is usually given at birth, long before the character chose a class, so it should match the race and the culture they grew up in. The epithet or nickname is where the class shows: it is the name the world gave them for what they do.

What is a good name for a paladin?

Paladins suit formal, honourable names with a title, such as Sir or Dame, and an epithet that names their virtue: the Just, the Faithful, the Radiant. Pick Paladin in the class list and the generator builds names in that shape, ready for a knight who takes their oath seriously.

How do I pick a class if I am new to D&D?

Fighter is the simplest to play, rogue and ranger are close behind, and cleric is a good pick if the party needs healing. Generate a few characters on Any and choose the class that the most appealing name belongs to. It is as good a way to decide as any other.

Can I generate a whole party at once?

Yes. Leave the class on Any and set How many to four or five, and you get a party with mixed races and classes. Swap out anything that clashes, such as two wizards, and roll again for that slot until the party covers the roles you need.
