How the RuneQuest Name Generator works

A RuneQuest name generator for Bronze Age mythic fantasy in the style of Glorantha. RuneQuest-style games are about heroes bound to clans, tribes and gods, in a world where myth is real and every cult has its own rites. Generate heroes, clans, tribes and cults.

How the RuneQuest name generator works

Heroes get short, ancient-sounding names that could come from any Bronze Age culture, like Orlath or Yinira, sometimes with an epithet like Two-Spears. Clans are named after a founding ancestor, an animal or a place. Tribes are larger and take a colour and animal, the Red Boar Tribe. Cults are named after the god or rune they serve, like the Cult of the Storm Bull.

    Clan and cult

In a Bronze Age setting, your clan and cult define you more than your name. Generate them together to build a character's place in the world.

    FAQ

What do RuneQuest names sound like?

Ancient and a little strange, with short syllables that feel older than medieval names. They suit a mythic world of bronze weapons, cattle raids and gods who walk among mortals.

    How are clans named?

Clans are usually named after a founding ancestor, a sacred animal or a place, like the Greydog Clan. The name reminds everyone where the clan came from and which spirits protect it.

    What is a cult?

In RuneQuest-style games, a cult is a religious group devoted to a god or rune, not a sinister secret society. Joining one grants magic and duties, so cult names matter a great deal.

Can I use these in other Bronze Age games?

Yes. The names are original and fit any Bronze Age, mythic or ancient fantasy game or story, from tabletop campaigns to novels about heroes, clans and gods, whatever system you prefer to play.
