How the Shadowfell Name Generator works

A Shadowfell name generator for D&D adventures in the plane of shadow. The Shadowfell is a dark, colourless echo of the mortal world where despair seeps into everything, and its places carry names to match. Generate grey towns, ruined keeps, bleak wilderness, shadow crossings and the domains of dread that hide in the mists.

How the Shadowfell name generator works

Everything in the Shadowfell is a faded copy of something in the world, so its place names feel like mortal names with the colour drained out. Grey towns combine a bleak first half, Grey, Mourn, Wane, with an ordinary English ending, giving Mournhaven or Gloamford. Ruins and keeps name a building and a sorrow, the Weeping Abbey, the Keep of Lost Names. Wilderness names describe the empty land between, the Starless Moor, the Ashen Fields. Shadow crossings name the thin places where travellers slip in from the world. Domains of dread get invented Gothic kingdom names, like Vaeloria or Morenholm, for the mist-bound prisons of dark lords.

    Setting the mood

Names are one of the quickest ways to set tone. Nothing in the Shadowfell should sound cheerful, and even its safe havens should sound tired. Say the name slowly and let the players feel how far from home they are.

    FAQ

What do Shadowfell place names sound like?

Tired, grey and sorrowful. They use words for dusk, ash, mourning and fading, attached to ordinary place endings, so they feel like a familiar town with the life drained out. Avoid bright colours and happy words.

What is a domain of dread?

In D&D, domains of dread are pocket realms in the Shadowfell, each a prison for a dark lord and wrapped in mist. The generator gives them invented Gothic names like Kaelavia. Use the site's Ravenloft-style generator for the people who live there.

    What is a shadow crossing?

A place where the mortal world and the Shadowfell meet, often somewhere sad: a graveyard, a battlefield, a dark mirror. Each crossing name here names its marker, so it doubles as an adventure hook.

Can I use these for any dark fantasy setting?

Yes. The names are original and describe bleak, haunted places in general, so they suit grimdark fantasy, a land of the dead or any cursed kingdom.
