How the Shifter Name Generator works

A shifter name generator for the beast-touched descendants of lycanthropes in Eberron. Shifters come in four kinds, beasthide, longtooth, swiftstride and wildhunt, and their names tend to carry a hint of the animal. Pick a shifter type for names that match its strengths, or leave it on Any.

How the shifter name generator works

Shifters live on the edge of human society, often in wild places like the Eldeen Reaches, and many live in family packs. Their given names are short and rough, sometimes ordinary human names and sometimes animal words, such as Bristle or Moss. A shifter's second name usually describes their shifting form: beasthide shifters are tough, longtooth shifters bite, swiftstride shifters are fast and wildhunt shifters track. The generator ties the second name to the type you choose, or gives a pack name instead.

The same approach works for any half-beast people in a homebrew world: werebeast descendants, beast-blooded tribes or characters touched by a curse. Keep the second name tied to the beast they carry.

    FAQ

    Do shifters use human names?

Some do, especially those living in towns, and many use an animal-flavoured name or nickname instead. A mix of the two works well. The generator's given names include both rough human names and nature words, so you can pick whichever fits your shifter's upbringing.

What is the difference between the four shifter types?

Beasthide shifters are tough and hardy, longtooth shifters grow fangs and bite, swiftstride shifters are fast and agile, and wildhunt shifters are keen trackers. The generator's second names reflect those strengths, so a swiftstride might be called Quickfoot and a beasthide Ironhide.

What is a shifter pack name?

Shifters often live in extended families called packs, and the pack name can serve as a family name. Pack names are short words for a place or a symbol, like Moon or Hollow. Use one for a shifter with strong family ties, or leave it off for a loner.

Are shifters the same as werewolves?

No. Shifters are descended from lycanthropes but are not lycanthropes themselves. They can briefly take on animal traits but do not transform fully and are not cursed. For names for true werewolves, use the werewolf page in the horror section.
