How the Starfinder Ship Name Generator works

A Starfinder ship name generator for science-fantasy crews. In Starfinder-style games, the party's starship is home, transport and a character in its own right. Generate explorer ships, freighters, warships, pirate vessels and quirky crew ships, with an optional registry prefix.

How the Starfinder ship name generator works

Each ship type has its own tone. Explorer ships get hopeful names about journeys and light, like ISV Far Seeker. Freighters get practical or tired names, the Rusty Mule or AV Slow Tuesday. Warships get stern, weighty names, SFV Iron Oath. Pirate vessels get menacing animals and dark jokes, the Grinning Jackal. Crew ships are for the party's own vessel, the kind of affectionate, slightly silly name a crew gives a ship they love despite its flaws, like the Slightly Haunted Teapot.

    Registry prefixes

The prefixes are generic, like ISV for an independent vessel. Swap in your own faction's prefix if your campaign has one.

    FAQ

What makes a good starship name?

A name that tells you what the ship does and who flies it. An explorer should sound hopeful, a warship should sound grim, and a party's ship should sound like the crew.

Why are some ship names funny?

Player crews often name their ship something silly or affectionate, especially if it is old and patched together. The Crew ship mode leans into that with names like the Duct-Taped Biscuit.

    What do the prefixes mean?

They are generic registry codes, like SS for starship or ISV for an independent space vessel. You can replace them with prefixes from your own campaign's factions, navies or corporations.

Can I use these in other space games?

Yes. The ship names are original and fit any space opera, science-fantasy or sci-fi game, from tabletop roleplaying to video games and fiction, for heroes, merchants and pirates alike.
