How the Strixhaven Name Generator works

A Strixhaven name generator for magic university campaigns in D&D, sorted by college. A Strixhaven-style school has rival colleges, each devoted to a different kind of magic, plus clubs, exams and a campus full of strange places. Pick a college and generate students and professors, or generate clubs and campus spots.

How the Strixhaven name generator works

Every student and professor gets a cosy, old-fashioned first name, the kind you'd find at a storybook school, like Hazel or Barnaby. The surname reflects their college. The college of words gets surnames about ink and verse, Inkwell. The college of art gets paint and fire, Brushfire. The college of numbers gets mathematical surnames, Axiomond. The college of lore gets relics and tomes. The college of life and death gets bogs, moss and nightshade. Students get a year of study and staff get the title Professor. Clubs and campus spots fill in the school around them.

    Colleges by subject

The generator describes colleges by subject rather than their published names. Each one lines up with a familiar school of magic, so you can map them to the official colleges or run your own university.

    FAQ

What do Strixhaven names sound like?

Cosy and a little old-fashioned, like a storybook boarding school. First names are classic, like Imogen or Percival. Surnames hint at the student's college, so a name like Juniper Mossgrave tells you she studies life and death magic.

Why are the colleges listed by subject?

The published college names belong to the setting's owner, so the generator describes each college by the magic it teaches. That keeps the names original while still matching the five familiar schools.

How do I name a school club?

Use the Club mode. Clubs work best with a playful adjective and an activity, like the Midnight Mushroom Society or the Owlish Chess Club. A club makes a great hook for a campus adventure.

Can I use these for other magic school games?

Yes. The names are original and fit any wizard school, magic academy or university campaign, in D&D or any other system, and in fiction too.
