How the Tolkien-style Elvish Name Generator (Sindarin / Quenya Patterns) works

An elvish name generator built from the word elements of Tolkien's two main Elvish languages. Choose Sindarin for the Grey-elven sound of Galadriel's Lothlórien and Rivendell, or Quenya for the High-elven sound of the Noldor. Names like Celebrindor and Elenwë are made the way Tolkien made his, from roots with meanings.

How the elvish name generator works

Tolkien built Elvish names from roots. In Sindarin, celeb is silver, gil star, mith grey, nim white, glor gold, aer sea, laur golden light, ered mountains. Common endings include -iel and -wen for women (daughter, maiden) and -dor, -ion and -las for men (land, son, leaf). Celebrindor combines silver with land. In Quenya, elen is star, nar fire, tar high, anar sun, isil moon, alda tree and mírë jewel, with feminine endings like -wë and -issë and masculine ones like -dil (friend) and -ndur (servant).

    Sindarin and Quenya sound

Sindarin is soft and Welsh-like, full of th, dh and consonant clusters, and was the everyday tongue of the elves of Middle-earth. Quenya is liquid and Finnish-like, with many vowels and endings like -ë and -ion, and was the ancient language of lore. A Sindarin name suits a wood-elf or a ranger's friend; a Quenya name suits an old lord of the Noldor or a Númenórean.

    Using the names

These names are fan creations built from published Elvish vocabulary. They work well for fan fiction, Lord of the Rings tabletop games and any fantasy setting that wants a Tolkien sound. For general fantasy elves not tied to Tolkien, see the elf name page. This site is not affiliated with the Tolkien Estate.

    FAQ

What is the difference between Sindarin and Quenya?

Quenya is the ancient High-elven language, used for lore, song and formal names, much like Latin. Sindarin is the living language of the Grey-elves and most elves in Middle-earth during the Third Age. Many elves had names in both, and Tolkien gave each a distinct sound.

Do the generated names mean anything?

Yes, roughly. Each name combines real roots from Tolkien's vocabulary, so Celebrindor is something like silver land and Elenwë star person. Tolkien's grammar is complex and some combinations would be shaped differently in true Sindarin, but the roots and their meanings are genuine.

Can I use these names in fan fiction?

Yes. Generated names built from Elvish word elements are fine for fan fiction and personal games. For commercial work, avoid using Tolkien's own character names and settings, since those are protected. The general sound of Elvish is not something anyone owns.

Why do some Quenya names end in ë?

The diaeresis over the final e tells English readers to pronounce it, so Elenwë is el-en-weh, not el-en-wee. Tolkien used it throughout Quenya. It is purely a pronunciation mark and can be dropped if your system does not support accented characters.
