How the Vaesen Name Generator works

A Vaesen name generator for Nordic folklore horror in the 1800s. In Vaesen-style games, investigators with the Sight travel across 19th-century Scandinavia, facing folklore creatures that most people have stopped believing in. Generate investigators, towns, farms and the creatures they hunt.

How the Vaesen name generator works

Investigators get 19th-century Swedish first names and surnames, with a profession like Doctor or Priest, since the game uses character archetypes. Towns combine common Swedish place parts, like köping for market town. Farms use a tree or stone and the Swedish word gården. Creatures are named after where they haunt, the Drowned Neck of Uppvik, using real figures from Nordic folklore.

    Folklore creatures

The neck, troll, mare and huldra are real figures from Scandinavian folklore, not invented monsters, so they are free to use.

    FAQ

What do 19th-century Swedish names sound like?

Formal and traditional, like Hedvig Almqvist or Gustaf Lindgren. Many surnames combine nature words, such as lind for linden or berg for mountain, which was common when families chose surnames.

    What is a vaesen?

In Scandinavian folklore, vaesen are supernatural beings like trolls, nixies and wights. They were once part of everyday belief, and the game imagines them fading as industry spreads.

    How should creatures be named?

Name them by their type and where they live, like the Pale Huldra of Norrberg. That is how villagers would talk about them, and it makes each creature feel tied to a place.

Can I use these in other folk horror games?

Yes. The names are original or historical and fit any Nordic, 19th-century or folk horror game or story, including gothic mysteries and supernatural investigation campaigns of any kind.
